Lock em up

When consumers purchases Disney movies the selection is limited to only a few, this is due to Disney placing their movies unto the "Disney Vault." Before VHS, Disney would re-release their animated films every 7 years, in theaters. Which started with the 1937 version of Snow White being re-released in 1944, this allowed people to enjoy the movie again. After the invention of VHS, Disney continued this tradition of re-releasing their animated masterpieces every seven years from the Disney Vault. Then once they came out on DVD, Disney changed it to every 10 years. When released from the vault they are available anywhere from 30 days to a few years before returning to the vault. Some may wonder why Disney does this. The Disney Comp. states that they do this to control their market and to allow Disney Movies to be fresh to new generations. The placing of Disney movies into the vault turns them into a collectables and the prices skyrocket. After Disney announces the date of a movie to enter the vault, sales are sure to increase, due to the fact that it will not be available for another 10 years. And if you turn to auction sites like EBay, beware most copies on there are pirated.
Resent movies that have gone into the vault are, Aladdin, Return of Jaffar, Peter Pan, Return to Never Never land. However, Mary Poppins, Oliver and Company, and Sleeping Beauty have just recently been released out of the vault. Pinocchio is one that is going to be released on March 10th. So if you are a collector, plan to have children in the next 10 years or just love Disney movies you may want to pick up these movie, cause once they are gone it will be 10 before we see them again.

  1. It is a good idea for Disney to do this with movies because it gives each movie some value at times of when it is in the vault. I know there have been times where I have wanted a movie and cannot find it anywhere. People will do almost anything sometimes to get movies they want and cannot find.

  2. This is a good idea to do this because it does spark children that have never seen it to buy the movie. For our age we have already seen it and probably already have the movie so there would b no point for us to buy it again, but to younger children they probably think it is a brand new movie. By putting the movies in the vault, it helps Disney gain more and more money. Sometimes when the movie comes out again in ten years, Disney changes the movie so even I would want to buy it because it is a little different. Do you think they will keep doing this down the road?

  3. That's an interesting system Disney has. I did not know they did that. If they release too many of one movie for a long period of time, people would get tired of it and Disney would have too many videos in stock. Since they are kids movies, they are likely to be ruined within ten years, so parents would buy them again. When kids grow to adults, they remember the good movies they watched when they were young and buy them for their kids. This was a good idea for Disney.

  4. I think it's a good idea for Disney to do this because when one of the movies does come out again after not seeing it since you were very young, to me it's almost like getting a new movie again. You see that its coming out and you realize that you haven't seen it in years and you get excited and go by it well at least I do, haha. And, when people have kids it is a good idea, because, then they remember how much they liked it when they were young and are more likely to buy it for their children. And, it's not like the young kids now will realize it's an old movie just because the movie doesn't stay out that long.

  5. This is a good idea to keep things in the Disney Vault and not have them available all the time. This way, people will rush out to buy the movies when they're available "for a limited time only", or "for the first time on BluRay". It gets people's attention and allows them to reminisce.

  6. I did not know they do that on Disney movies I found that interesting. Disney movies are the best ever since Aladdin and The lion King Disney has influence my life in a good way. Disney always reminds me of my little sister when she always asks me to put a Disney movie on the TV. I never had heard of the vault but it is good to hear about something like that. Good Post.

  7. I have mixed feelings on Disney and them putting them into the vault. I mean, I can't really complain because my parents bought me majority of Disney movies on VHS when i was a little girl. (And I thank them for this:) ) But there are a couple of Disney movies that I haven't seen in a long time that I would like to watch and who knows when they will be out of the vault. As for marketing, this is a very good idea, the whole get it while you can because soon it's gonna be gone idea is a very sly way, but smart way of doing business. There is a reason why Walt was a very rich man...

  8. I really think that doing this is a great thing for Disney. It’s great for the market money wise cause I know whenever I see an old Disney movie coming out on DVD I can’t wait to go buy it!! It’s crazy how many Disney movies you see coming out on DVD now. It is also a good idea to show the younger children what movies use to be out and what movies you have watched when you were younger. I just love this idea because it always makes me think back to my childhood memories whenever my sisters and I would watch so many movies!! Great post Melissa!

  9. I guess I would like to have the classics available all the time, but i can see why Disney does it. It kinda keeps the movies timeless. Sure when I look back these movies seem pretty old, but for people who have never seen them its like the movies are first releasing. It is a smart technique to make money. Disney can release the same movie every 10 years with very little expenses at all. Its a marketing strategy, but also a way to make sure that these great Disney movies live on forever.

  10. I hate that Disney does this to us, even though it is smart on their end of the deal. It's torture to those of us that didn't take their advice and buy buy buy when we had the chance to do so. I would just like to be able to go out and buy these movie when I have the money, because quite coincidentally I never seem to have the funds for the movies when they come out!

  11. I personally think the Disney vualt is a stupid idea and is just a way to sell more money. For example I know for a fact that there has been movies to come on tv and say this is the last chance to buy it before it is locekd in the vualt for another 20 years. But then a year later you can still buy it in stores. I dont think thats far to the kids, good marketing but bad ethics. Just my opinion
